But nostalgia covers up a lot of flaws, and Speed Racer will always be a favorite amongst viewers who were too young to care at the time. Dexter's Laboratory did a particularly funny parody of it in the episode titled "Mock 5," and Family Guy spoofed it as well. This slight oversight led to the signature hurry-up-gotta-say-this-whole-paragraph-in-one-breath dialogue that was so bad it was almost charming. The English voice actors had to rush to fit in dialogue for all the scenes that were directly and literally translated from Japanese. The voice acting, however, was really where the cheese factor kicked in. The title change from "Mahha Go Go Go" to "Speed Racer" was, without a doubt, a good decision. The new theme song was a bit reminiscent of old radio jingles, and it was catchy (a whole American generation can recognize the tune in just a few notes). When asked about his prior experience with the Sonic franchise before he started work on the adaptation, 4Kids producer/writer/adaptation lead Michael Haigney replied, "I've never played the game, seen the series or read the comics." TV had a few continuity errors with the games the show was based on. Besides the sub par voice acting, the version shown on U.S. Sonic X Sonic X wasn't a brilliant show to begin with, but the 4Kids adaptation made it look worse than it really was. The Bad These adaptations weren't woefully awful, but they were a far cry from high quality. Miyazaki and his companions at Studio Ghibli were so offended that they refused to consider Western licenses for years afterwards. It was seen as a serious affront to the Japanese anime industry. Miyazaki was understandably upset when he saw this bastardized version of his vision. To top it all off, the VHS cover art for the film showed characters that weren't even in the movie. They produced the adaptation on the cheap, changed character names, and cut out a whole half hour of the original movie. New World Pictures licensed the anime, and then proceeded to mangle it. Warriors of the Wind Warriors of the Wind was the 1986 English adaptation of Hayao Miyazaki's revered Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. The Animax version of the series (properly titled Card Captor Sakura) is leaps and bounds better. As it stands, their hack job yielded poor results commercially and artistically. Nelvana tried to make a show that was originally targeted to Japanese girls work for American boys, and they actually might have been able to pull it off if they'd had higher standards. They did all this via clumsy script rewrites and patchy footage editing. So, in their infinite wisdom, Nelvana completely removed any hint of any relationships between the characters, and made the male characters more prominent to go for a more mixed audience. The original Japanese show was rampant with not so subtle references to same-sex crushes amongst the main characters, and that just wouldn't work for American audiences apparently. It was based on the popular Japanese anime Card Captor Sakura, and the folks over at Nelvana decided they would be better off if they downplayed Sakura's role as lead/title character and enhanced the prominence of Li Shaoran, the male character who was originally more of a sidekick. FUNimation has since picked up adaptation of the series and done a much better job, but the 4Kids take still gives American otaku nightmares.Ĭard Captors This series is kind of a special case. Not to mention the fact that the voices in the dub were awful. The changes themselves are somewhat understandable, but the ragtag quality of those edits and lack of thought shown really make the adaptation rather goofy. Some of the changes: They removed one character's ever-present cigarette, the pirate guns were changed into water guns, and there's the infamous "hammer gun" edit that changed a flintlock pistol into a poorly edited and absolutely ridiculous hammer on a spring with a trigger attached. Fox's Broadcast Standards and Practices forbid things like smoking and realistic weapons in their shows, so some elements of the original series had to be edited. One Piece 4Kids has earned a bad reputation for their "questionable" adaptations of popular anime series, but their work on the beloved One Piece series was an epic failure that made all their other blunders look like masterpieces. We're more concerned with shows whose English adaptations were remarkably, laughably worse than the original source material. The Ugly There are some shows that were just bad in their original Japanese incarnations as well, so we've decided to omit them here.
